Yesterday I started another Bikram 30 day-challenge. For those of you who have never hear of a Bikram 30 day challenge this is when you complete one Bikram yoga class every day for 30 days. Bikram yoga is a series of 26 yoga postures and two breathing exercises completed for 90 minutes in a heated room.
I have completed a Bikram Yoga Challenge once before and found it to be one of the toughest things I have ever done so you may be wondering why on earth I would I sign up to do another one. It is hard to explain but by the end of the 30 days even though my body was tired and a little achy I do remember feeling better than I have in years and I feel that now would be a really great time to be feeling like that again.
They say if you commit yourself to a Bikram yoga challenge within the scope of 30 days you will thoroughly change your body and your mind. Whether you are suffering from physical or mental blockages, the consistent practice will give you a stronger, healthier body and the strength and determination it requires to complete the challenge will give you a stronger mind.
I think you get such great physical benefits because of the heat which warms your muscles, allowing for a deeper safer stretch as you move through the yoga postures. Practicing in a hot room also causes your body to sweat which assists it to get rid of toxins.
For me though it is the mental benefits that keeps me going back to yoga. To get through a Bikram Yoga class you need concentration, determination, patience, faith and self control, all of which improve through practice leading to increased mental clarity and increased resistance to the negative effects of stress. The teachers often say if you can keep calm in the Bikram class with everything that is going on in there (the intense heat, dripping sweat, 26 postures, other students and the continuous teachers commands) you will be able to stay calm in challenging situations outside of the yoga room. I believe this to be true as no matter what is going on in my life after a hot yoga class I feel calm, happy and stress free. So with that in mind off I go to my second class of my Bikram Yoga Challenge :-)
