Five ways to make your work day healthy

Our work weeks tend to be jammed pack of endless lists of to-dos, and often healthy practises fall to the bottom of the list. Healthy eating gets pushed aside for quick and convenient food options. For some the pace of working life is so fast sometimes healthy eating gets saved for the weekend when we there is more time. But with a little planning, there are definitely ways you can make your workday healthy too. Use the following 5 tips to make your workday healthy and feel your best all week long.

Five Ways to Make your Workday Healthy

  1. Edit Your Schedule. If you plan on making your workday healthier, you are going to have to make adjustments to your already busy schedule. Before your week begins, look at the most important things you have to do, and adjust accordingly. If something doesn’t really need to be done urgently, push it back to you don’t end up burning yourself out with too much on your plate. Also, make sure to schedule time throughout the day for lunch and to snacking on healthy items that will keep your energy levels up.
  2. Pack a Healthy Lunch & Bring Healthy Snacks. Plan your meals for the week on Sunday before you go back to work. Instead of getting a quick unhealthy meal on your lunch break, pack your own lunch that is healthy and nutritious. Sandwiches with lean protein on whole grain breads are great and will keep well throughout the day. Freeze grapes and take them to eat throughout the day. Trail mix with a variety of nuts, dried fruit, and berries will give you the energy you need to keep going as the workday stretches on.
  3. Exercise on your Lunch Break. Even if you have a short lunch break, taking just 15 minutes of a half hour lunch break to fit in a little exercise will do wonders for your energy levels for the rest of the day. Go for a walk around your building, find a quiet room to stretch in, or take advantage of the gym if your office offers one. Exercise in your lunch break will leave you feeling more energised and ready to tackle the last half of your day.
  4. Take a Break. Do not forget to take breaks throughout the workday. Even if you cannot leave your desk, it is possible to take a couple of minutes to tune out your work and focus on your breath. Practice deep breathing throughout the day to help your mind focus. If you are scheduled for a 15 or 20 minute break, use this time to get out of the office and move around a bit.
  5. Get Rid of Bad Habits. We all have bad habits and they often come to work with us and become part of our regular routine. Do you have a co-worker who brings donuts in every Friday? The next time this happens, politely decline. As tempting (and delicious) as they may be, they are definitely not part of a healthy workday. Work on chopping out just one bad habit a week so you are sure to stick with it. By the end of the month, you’ll feel so much better, and be more inclined to keep bad habits at bay.
