Best Fabric for Sportswear

Sportswear has come a long way from the baggy sweatshirts and leotards of yesterday. Sportswear today is made from a variety of different fabrics that are designed with different activities in mind. Choosing the right sportswear fabric can become a little confusing, but when you know what means what in active wear textiles, you’ll be sure to pick the very best material to fit your workout needs.

You definitely want to consider what your workout needs are when picking out the right fabrics for your exercise clothing. Are you practicing yoga where you have to bend and twist and need a fabric that moves easily with your body? Or are you a runner who must have a fabric that wicks away moisture to help keep you dry? Not all performance wear fabrics are made the same, and it really does matter what workout you’re doing when deciding on the right textiles.

If you’re planning on doing a workout that requires your body to move in and out of many different poses (think yoga), you’ll want to find a fabric that moves with you. Polyester and spandex are great for yoga clothes, but do little to help sustain the environment. For the eco-conscious yogi, there are sportswear fabrics that are made from organic cotton and bamboo, which all allow freedom of movement without harming the environment.

Looking for something that moves with you and keeps you dry? If you do any sort of exercise that makes you sweat, you know how important it is to have a fabric that wicks moisture away and keeps it away. Bamboo is excellent for keeping you dry and is four times as absorbent as cotton. There’s a huge variety of sportswear made out of bamboo that will keep you dry and comfortable during intense workouts.

Tenecel is another performance fabric that is good for you and the environment. Made from the pulp of Eucalyptus trees, this fabric performs just as well as synthetic materials such as polyester and spandex. When wearing clothing made from tenecel, moisture is naturally pulled away from the skin and released into the environment. This uber-soft fabric is durable and an excellent alternative for your modern sportswear needs.
