How to Keep Motivated to Exercise in Winter

Just because the weather outside is horrid doesn’t mean you have to skip out on your regular exercise routine. It’s tough to stay motivated to exercise in the winter and cold weather isn’t exactly the most inviting when you want to get outside and get your body moving.

How to Keep Motivated to Exercise in Winter

Even though cold weather makes it tough to stay motivated, try changing your mindset about keeping fit in the cold. Remember why you exercise in the first place and the super amazing benefits a regular exercise routine offers.

Keeping the following things in mind when you’d rather not step outside will help you stay motivated and keep your body in shape over winter.

  • Set Goals

Setting goals for your workout routine will keep going when you’d rather not. Think about increasing your resistance weights, pushing yourself to learn that challenging yoga move, or running that marathon you’ve been thinking about this spring. When you have a specific goal in mind, exercise becomes a whole lot easier.

  • Take a Class

Find a new fitness class at your local gym and enroll for the winter months. This will make you get up and out of the house and will add variety to your normal routine. Find something that sounds fun and you will find yourself suddenly looking forward to your workout no matter what the weather is like.

  • Buy New Workout Clothes

There is something about a new workout outfit that makes you motivated to exercise. Feeling good about how you look will keep your motivation level at its peak and you’ll feel great going to class or getting outside in something that makes you look and feel amazing.

  • Incorporate Social Media

Posting on social media sites about your workout routine and fitness goals keeps you accountable for finishing what you start. You’ll find you receive a ton of support from friends and family this way and it can be just what you need to keep you going.

  • Add Variety to your Routine

There’s nothing more demotivating than doing the same thing every single day. Who wants to do the same yoga sequence or run the same route day in and day out? Switching up your routine and adding some variety to your workout will keep you motivated and make you look forward to trying new things. There are literally hundreds of thousands of workout videos online and you’re bound to find something you like that changes the way you get your workout on.

  • Treat Yourself
Did you make it out of the house to exercise in the cold? Go ahead and reward yourself! Working out in the winter can be tough and when you face this challenge head on, you are more than deserving of a treat. Buy that new yoga mat you’ve been looking at. You deserve it.
